Veganville (Justin Timberlake, SNL)

By Emily McLaughlin

I finally got around to watching Saturday’s SNL hosted by Justin Timberlake. If you haven’t seen it, get your butt on the internet and watch it, goshdarnit! He sings, he dances, he acts, he has an infectious smile… I could go on and on about how great JT is, but y’all know.

There were some great skits throughout the episode featuring greats like Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and others. Being the health-nut I am, I obviously found the Veganville skit freakin’ hilarious. JT has the power to make veganism look cool simply by dressing like a block of tofu. Check it out!

February Challenge: Plank-a-day

By Emily McLaughlin

I just put together a *quick*  video about my February challenge. As many of you know, I am doing one new challenge every month to keep me on my toes and test my willpower in the new year. In January I managed to keep to a vegetarian/pescestarian diet (here are some benefits I found). Last night, I celebrated my accomplishment by going out for a lovely burger dinner… except… I might have gotten a veggie burger. BUT, it was only because this restaurant apparently had the best veggie burger in Boston. Plus, Ryo had an inkling that I probably would opt out of a meaty burger anyways (he knows me too well).

Anyways… Here is the video:

Yoga after a run

By Emily McLaughlin

Today I put together  a quick video from all of you runners… or wannabes (me).

Do this quick little yoga/stretching sequence after a run to help realign muscle fibers that have bunched or tangled during exercise. Realigning these fibers speeds up the recovery process, helping you get in gear for your next workout.

This sequence can be done in the comfort of your dorm room, living room or, like in my case, the tiny space you call a bedroom. Enjoy!

P.S. I’ll try to find a bigger venue for my next video. ;)

2012: Day 1

By Emily McLaughlin

Today is the first day of the new year… I am sure you were aware of this. January 1, 2012. Wow.

After you get over the shock of it being twenty-twelve, take some time to reflect about the past year and decide how you are going to make this one better.

Many of us are resolving to make health/wellness changes in the new year and it is important to not waste any time! If you haven’t done so already, take some time to sweat, stretch or simply get your blood flowing today. Bring your body temperature up and release those feel-good endorphins.

Today, I went on a hike with a few friends (because it was 50 degrees out… what?!).

For me, this was the perfect way to jumpstart 2012–but you don’t have to hike to start your year off right. Take 10, 30, 60 minutes to exercise in your home. Hop on the treadmill or try one of these workout videos–compliments of my lovely UMass Group Fitness friends.

Here’s to a healthy and happy new year. :)
